Renana, a rare Sand Cat kitten, was recently born at the Ramat Gan Safari Park in Tel Aviv.
Also known as the “Sand Dune Cat”, this small wild cat inhabits the deserts of Iran and Pakistan, the Arabian Desert, and the Sahara Desert. Although they drink water when they find it, they are able to survive for months on the water in their food. They can survive in temps of up to about 125° F.
As of January 20, 2010, there were 26 sand cats in captivity in the United States.
