deborah barnes and karen nicholsWith Deborah Barnes (photo with Karen Nichols, left), it was love at first sight. I met her face-2-face at BlogPaws after a year or so of online interaction and it she was everything I’d hoped she would be: a loon-crazy cat lady who was a vision in leopard print. We shared an affinity for novelty cat glasses and hit it off immediately. We each had an identical pair of cat shades, in fact — hers were black, mine pink.

I’d been waiting months to finally get my hands on her book, The Chronicles of Zee & Zoey – A Journey of the Extraordinarily Ordinary.

Zee and Zoey’s story is certainly a cat tale, but it’s also the enchanting, engaging story of a cat woman whose life (and the lives of those she loves) is transformed through her relationship with her cats. No biggie there; we’ve all been through it. But Debra’s cats, Zee and Zoey share a mystical bond that suggests they’d been together in previous lives. Zee, the king of the house, is a stately, mellow Maine Coon cat. Zoey is a playful, smart, active Bengal cat who turns Zee’s life upside down. And yes, there are kittens involved.

It’s an elegant dream of a book, impeccably designed with gorgeous photography and lush illustrations. It’s a feast for the eyes. And the soul.

There’s not a cat lady (or cat guy) alive who won’t identify with the story, replete with job loss and love and yes, lots of cats. I went back and forth as I read it trying to identify its niche: was it a cat story, or a cat lady’s memoir? It doesn’t matter. You won’t be able to put it down.

I would love to have a Bengal cuz they love water. My favorite cat I ever had was Sherbet. He was an orange tabby, very loyal cat who acted a lot like a dog.

I loved an old very cranky black cat from my childhood. He was always there for me with a purr and some strategically placed kneading. You never forget your first one.

Little Big Man…lost him to cancer at the young age of 10. He was born in my house and he was my buddy and best friend. I miss him so much.

My best cat ever, hmmmm. Well there was Tessa, my first kitty, then Corey followed by Tres. After Tres came Taye who moved to WA with me. In WA, Maurice, Frosty, Tyke and Rowdy joined the family. We moved back to PA and eventually Omar, Pyro, Bitsa, Charm and Woody moved in. Then just this year sugar kitties Minuit and Pough came into my life. I say they’re all the best!

  10. Shadow Dance Ranch Kittehs says:

Our momma loves us all equally, but if we had to pick one of us, we vote for Ghostdancer :) He is the big ginger kitteh mancat with a heart of gold.

  11. Don’t tell the other cats, but mom says I am her favorite – from sick tiny foster kitten to handsome house panther mancat!! -Mozart

  12. Karen – who would have thought being called a crazy loon cat lady would be a compliment, but coming from you, I take it with the highest regard, as the title is one we mutally share! I equally enjoyed meeting you in person and am THRILLED you enjoyed the book. Thank you so much for this wonderful review and I am glad to see you enjoyed the book on so many different levels.

NO need to enter me into the contest but wanted to introduce myself and I hope to meet you in Salt Lake City at next Blog Paws conference! Cheers, Christine

  19. Debbie says:

My cat Moomin died of a stroke in April this year, he was 17 years old, black and white with the greenest eyes you’ve ever seen. When I got him he hissed and spat and he had been beaten, burnt and badly abused, it took years for him to feel safe around people… but that made it all the more special when he decided to like you. A character that was always surprising, scared of his own shadow, but a beautiful loving boy…

  20. Cheysuli says:

Hey! Where is my comment. What do you mean the Woman didn’t comment. Thank Me for the fact that you reposted this so I can comment and maybe win a book. That will make her sit in a chair and read.

The Woman says the best cat she ever had was her Iggy Cat. (EXCUSE ME?!) He was not the best in terms of being the easiest cat but they were bonded in a way she hasn’t bonded with other cats. He was with her through many difficult times. He was a large orange tabby with a bulls eye on his side and weighed in at 17 pounds, but the vet said he was tall so didn’t need to loose much weight!
