Stubbs the Cat, mayor of Talkeetna, Alaska (115 miles north of Anchorage), is recovering at a veterinary hospital following an attack by a dog.

Saturday’s vicious attack left the orange tabby with bruised hips, a punctured lung, a long gash on his side and a fractured sternum. His sternum may need to be repaired with a plate. The 16-yr-old cat is under heavy sedation and veterinary care.

So far he is holding his own, according to Lauri Stec, member of Stubbs’ staff and manager of Nagley’s General Store, where Stubbs lives. He’s begun to sit up and eat, and a tube inserted into his lung has been removed.

“He’s a freaking tough boy,” she told AP.

Stec knows the dog who attacked Stubbs and has reported him to Animal Control.

Stubbs is a local–and international– celebrity. Donations from well-wishers as far away as Australia have been pouring in for his vet bills.

“He’s everybody’s guy,” said Stec. Geoff Pfeiffer, a local waiter, said, “We all love him.”

You can follow Stubbs’ progress on his Facebook page.
