Cat Guys We Love: Mike Phillips

Mike Phillips Urban Cat league Cat Guy

Is there a Crazy Cat Lady alive who isn’t charmed to death by Cat Guys? Just by virtue of this single cat-loving attribute, the Cat Guy is ushered into a special revered class.

Mike Phillips of NYC is the resident stage director of the New York City Opera. When he’s not back stage, he’s a kitten socialization guru and co-founder of the Urban Cat League. He fosters cats in his home which includes an outdoor enclosure custom-built for cats.

Mike’s an unapologetic Cat Guy. “Someone once said to me, ‘Oh, that’s your thing: cats.’ I was speechless. People shouldn’t reduce others to that, like we only have space in our life for one thing.”

Mike has a special gift for socializing kittens. “Every cat has their Achilles heel when it comes to taming them,” he says. “Some can’t resist the laser light, food or a toy. You just have to find their incentive to let you into their world.”

The Urban Cat League (UCL) which Mike CO-founded is a nonprofit that cares for New York City’s street cats and educates people worldwide who need help with street cats in their communties. Mike’s video “Tough Love: Socializing Feral Kittens,” has over 100,000 views on YouTube.

Mike is one of six remarkable “Cat Ladies” profiled this month in Best Friend’s Magazine. A donation to Best Friends will ensure you get their magazine delivered to your home so you don’t miss this and other amazing cat caregiver stories.
