What better act can you perform to thank our veterans for their service than help ensure their pets are cared for during their service commitments and provide companion animals for veterans who need them?
Purina is honoring veterans this month by donating $100,000 to two organizations dedicated to the military and their pets.
Here’s Where You Come In and It Won’t Cost a Cent…
The public gets to vote on which of two organizations will get the biggest slice of this donation pie. The organization that receives the most votes will receive $75K, and the second place charity will receive $25K. The two charities in contention are Dogs on Deployment and Pets for Vets. This organization matches up military personnel with folks who will give their pets a home for the duration of their service commitments. Dogs on Deployment promotes responsible, life-long pet ownership by military pet owners by advocating for military pet owner rights, providing educational resources and granting financial assistance for military pet owners during times of emergency.
And, despite the name, Dogs on Deployment is not speciest. They place any type of pet, not just canines. For example, Whisper and Jack will be living with Joan through next June.
This organization is dog-specific. They help heal the emotional wounds of military veterans by pairing them with a shelter dog that is specially selected to match his or her personality. Some estimates state that as many as 20% of returning military veterans suffer from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). The troops who have returned with physical and emotional injuries that have made it difficult to transition back to civilian life can benefit significantly from companion animals.
