Jasper McKitten-Cat and Siblings

Today we interview one of the old time bloggers. We remember Jasper McKitten-Cat and his siblings from our own early blogging days.

Funny Farmer Felines: Please introduce yourself and your human.

Jasper McKitten-Cat: I am Jasper McKitten-Cat. I am a ginger mancat and the primary blogger here. My first blog post was way back on October 25, 2004 before I even knew that there were cat bloggers. I really started blogging as a way to leave messages and pictures for my Dad when he was at work. He works as a chiropractor, (Yes, he adjusts me too — it helps with my snoring in the sink.) and he enjoyed getting a break and seeing what I’d been up to that day.

Shortly after I started blogging, my sister Josie and brother Huggy Bear came to live with us, first as foster cats, then as family, and this really gave more life and activity to the blog. When I’m not blogging or sleeping in the sink, I like to help snoopervise whatever my Mom is doing. She runs a local community theatre and when they don’t have a show going on she can work from home, so I can snoopervise her work.

Funny Farmer Felines: Please introduce your siblings too.

Jasper McKitten-Cat: I have three siblings: Josie, Huggy Bear, and Maggie.

Josie is Dad’s tuxie girl. She claimed him a while back. When she was a little kitten she would harass Mom to come to bed when she was up late on the office desktop computer, and Josie would snuggle up against Mom under the covers and sleep right against Mom’s leg and she’d get so cozy that she would drool. Then one day she discovered Dad’s lap, and she’s been Dad’s girl ever since.

Huggy Bear is a house panther and he is the biggest lover of the bunch. He has that insta-purr that turns on the second he sees you, and when it is time to go to bed he’s waiting for Mom and Dad. He will snuggle up between them, and make it hard for Mom to get out of bed some mornings.

Maggie is our one-eyed tuxie cat. She’s the tiniest of us all, but she’s also a bit of a brat. I say that with all the love I have. She was very sick as a kitten and lost her right eye even before she had function of it, so Mom spoiled her. Maggie and Huggy Bear are best buddies, and Maggie greets Mom and Dad at the door as soon as they come home. Now she’ll also tussle and bite you on the butt, and I blame her for my vet visits, but I love her and let her win these battles even though I weight three times what she does. She’s also a great snuggler. I guess we’re all pretty lovey, now that I say it out loud like this.

Funny Farmer Felines: How did you all come to live together?

Jasper McKitten-Cat: I was born in a no-kill shelter in Moline, Illinois. My mom was a Manx, my dad must have been a Maine Coon. I was the last of my litter to be adopted and when Mom and Dad came to the shelter I climbed on Mom’s shoulder and chewed her hair and she was in love from that very moment. When I was two we moved from Davenport, Iowa to an apartment in Columbia, SC.

Josie and Huggy Bear were from our neighbor’s cat (the neighbor would let their cat out — she had four litters before Mom and Dad got permission to have her fixed). Josie was adopted and Huggy Bear and their two other siblings were fostered. HB, being a black cat, was up against the odds of being picked, and he was so sweet that he won over our hearts and joined our family. Maggie was from the last litter of the neighbor’s cat — one of 10 kittens. Momma cat had trouble taking care of them all, and Maggie got sick. Mom really didn’t think she’d make it, so she got spoiled, and loved to pieces, and we became a four cat family.

Funny Farmer Felines: Tell us a little about the area where you live.

Jasper McKitten-Cat: If you ask my siblings, they’d say I live in the master bathroom sink. It is one of my favorite places to hang out, especially in the hot summers here. We are in “famously hot” Columbia, SC, although I stay inside and out of the heat.

Funny Farmer Felines: Do you have any nicknames?

Jasper McKitten-Cat: J-Purr, Jazzy, Big Orange Boy.

Funny Farmer Felines: What kind of mischief do you like to get into, either separately or together?

Jasper McKitten-Cat: I really like to chew on cords. It doesn’t matter if there was Bitter End on it or not, I’ll still chew it. I’ve killed too many phone chargers to count. I really like to chew plastic bags, too.

Funny Farmer Felines: What made you open a blog?

Jasper McKitten-Cat: I started blogging to give Dad a chance to check in on my daily routine and to have pictures of me online. I started in 2004 before there were so many resources — there weren’t even comments on Blogger at the time. Shortly after starting, I met William of Mass Destruction, Ginger the Cat, Timothy Dickens, PsychoKitty Max, Diva Kitty Sophia, and Scooby, Shaggy and Scout. I’m among what I consider the First Generation of cat bloggers, before the Cat Blogosphere was a thing, and when you could visit all the blogs in about 20 minutes. I love all the relationships I’ve built over the years thanks to this blog, and Mom and Dad have met some amazing people because of me, which is really cool.

Funny Farmer Felines: Do you participate in any blogging events?

Jasper McKitten-Cat: Maggie is missing one eye, so Meow Like a Pirate is purrfect for her. She’ll wear an eye patch and looks so piratey. For a while, we were very good about Wordless Wednesdays. It was one of our favorite blog theme days

Funny Farmer Felines: What is your greatest love and your biggest fear?

Jasper McKitten-Cat: I love good naps and getting my face brushed. There’s something magical about that brush against your cheeks. I’ve recently discovered the joys of wet food (Stinky Goodness), but primarily because Maggie needed to gain a little weight and I sneak over and have some of hers. Also, I love drinking water off the bathroom counter, not from a bowl, but an actual small puddle in the counter. It is the best way to drink water. My biggest fears would have to be the vacuum and car rides (because they usually end at the vet).

Funny Farmer Felines: Does your human foster any furbabies?

Jasper McKitten-Cat: It’s probably a good thing Mom doesn’t foster any cats because she’d end up keeping them all.

Funny Farmer Felines: How would you describe yourself?

Jasper McKitten-Cat: I am a fairly social cat. When we have company I enjoy visiting with the people and getting my share of attention. Of course, snoopervising is a very important part of being a cat, and I do that as well. We are all pretty good, friendly cats. We’ve heard of cats that hide, or are always fussy. We are not like that at all. The only time I get irritable is sometimes around little people who want to love me a little too much.

Funny Farmer Felines: If we were to ask your human dad what he loves best about you, what do you think he would say?

Jasper McKitten-Cat: It would have to be my white belly, my floofy toes, and the spots on my nose.

Funny Farmer Felines: Is there anything we missed that would pertain to you?

Jasper McKitten-Cat: I should have probably mentioned that I was adopted in 2002, Josie and Huggy Bear in 2004, and Maggie in 2005.

Funny Farmer Felines: We are intrigued that there is a chiropractor in the family and can’t help but wonder whether a few adjustments might not help our canine brothers to sound like normal dogs. Buddy urps like a seal and Marcus sings soprano when he’s excited. It’s just a thought since it helped Jasper with his snoring in the sink.

You can find Jasper, Jose, Huggy Bear and Maggie hanging out together on the blog Jaspermckittencat.

  3. Man, the early days of cat blogging were something, weren’t they? We all got to know each other and the house trashing parties were amazing. And the Olympics! I’m not even sure we could pull that off now. I’m wicked happy that I found you pretty early in your blogging, dood.

    1. Me too! I really feel like we got to know each other so well in those early days because it was so much easier to keep up. I’m happy to see so many cat bloggers out there, though.

  4. Hi, kitties! How cool that your Dad is a chiropractor! Petcretary regularly goes to one,and she has heard that there is one here in town that does pets, too. Wow! Also a pet acupuncturist.

You have a great life together! Thanks for sharing it with me (Pipo),and Dog-guy.

Our Minko, now an angel, was an expert at destroying cords of all kinds, the best tasting ones seemed to be the dedicated Apple laptop computer power cords. Sheesh!

  5. Oh what amazingly beautiful kitties (of course, I would love La Josie, the Tuxie, being one myelf) but all of you are so interesting and so loving and do the snuggle thing as I do with mama’s knees and take to laps as I do to papa’s jeans, haha. Thank you for a GREAT interview, Funny Farmers and kitties. Will visit often.
