Now on Deck: 7 Lynx Kits and Ma

Alaskans get even more wildlife in their backyards than we do, and it’s always way more interesting than ours. Photographer Tim Newton got a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity this week to welcome seven rambunctious lynx cubs on the deck of his home at the edge of Chugach Park. He heard the pitter pat of little feet, maybe even someone playing Thundering Herd of Elephants, so he peeked out, thinking it was probably Yogi Bear or Sasquatch. Instead he saw a bunch of cats who weren’t your average ferals.

“I took a second look and realized it wasn’t a full-grown cat but a baby lynx. They’re about the same size at this age,” he said. “They’ve turned the deck into a romper room, having a heck of a time,” Newton joked.

Lucky for us, Tim was quick to grab his camera and document the ruckus. Note the HUGE FEET these little ones have!

  1. Aren’t they remarkable kitties? Those long legs, and tiny tail…and the tips of their ears! I had no idea that mama Lynx had so many in a litter; what a great catch by the guy with the deck and a ready camera!
