28-Lb Tabby Finds Home and Purrsonal Trainer

Fat Albert needed a home. But not just any home — he needed to live with someone committed to helping Albert lose half of his body weight. Because Albert isn’t just fat; at 28 pounds, he is morbidly obese.

Enter Mary Barker. She heard about Albert via social media when his photos went viral after he was left at the  Maricopa County Animal Care and Control facility in Mesa, AZ earlier this month. Mary decided to adopt him because she specializes in special-needs cats and can’t resist a challenge.

“He’s gonna require a lot of daily work to help him become the cat that he should be,” Barker said. “It’s pretty terrible that he got in this condition.”

She should be well-equipped to face the challenge of getting Albert back into shape: one of her cats has injuries from being severely wounded and another is an amputee.

Experts estimate it will take at least two years to bring Albert down to his ideal weight. Barker is working with her vet to develop a weight-loss plan that balances caloric intake and exercise.

“I’m really excited about Albert. I haven’t had one as big as he is before,” Barker said. “There will be a little bit of a learning curve.”
