Well, the Interwebs has spoken: Browser the Library Cat will keep the job he holds so dear. Ever the overachiever, Browser attends the library’s GED classes and has earned an honorary diploma. Every year the library sells a Browser calendar as a fundraiser.
But as reported here, a disgruntled dog owner rallied to have the former feral fired from his job as the Library Cat in White Settlement, Texas, after the whiner was denied permission to bring a puppy to work at city hall.
Councilman Elzie Clements led the attack on Browser, saying “City Hall and city businesses are no place for animals.” Then Council member Steve Ott jumped on the fire-Browser bandwagon, expressing concerns about the danger of cat dander allergens.
Two weeks ago, the city council voted 2-1 to give Browser his pink slip. The decision found its way to the Interwebs, a petition to reinstate Browser was started, and over 1000 cat lovers from around the world begged the city council to reconsider. Smothered by the avalanche of complaints, the council members reconvened and voted unanimously to let Browser keep his job.
Browser was touched by all the support. “I wuz werried that I wood wunse agin be livin on the meen streets of Wite Settlement,” he told Mousebreath in an email interview. “But my fanz rallied arownd me and I can nap in the stacks agin. It is a viktery for felines evryware.”
