Jackson Galaxy’s book Cat Daddy: What the World’s Most Incorrigible Cat Taught Me About Life, Love, and Coming Clean went on sale today and it is quite possibly the best, least conventional cat book I’ve ever read. If you believe in fate, that some animals are thrust into your life as healing agents (or vice versa), drop everything right now and buy it.
Although it’s ostensibly a memoir with Galaxy’s beloved and bedeviled cat Benny — the original cat from hell — at its nexus, it’s also so much more than that. It’s a story of redemption and courage told with humor and savage honesty. The book is peppered with nuggets of cat factoids, training and behavior advice that will help you deal with your own cats, even cats from hell.
Benny was a physical and emotional wreck when he was first taken in by Galaxy as a foster. A veterinarian can fix a broken body (in Benny’s case, a broken pelvis), but only someone who thinks and speaks cat can heal the emotional scars. Benny had been turned in by a woman who “just didn’t like him.” We all know that cats are sensitive souls who can usually pick up on our emotions more readily than our loved ones do. Benny was a victim of this negative energy.
Of course he ended up as a failed foster. Despite — or or perhaps because of — his incorrigible personality and broken psyche and body, he became Jackson’s family.
The metamorphosis of cat and man was neither quick nor easy. Galaxy was battling his own demons — manifested as addictions to drugs and alcohol — and was on a collision course with the bowels of hell. But his and Benny’s relationship turned out to be a purrfect symbiosis and the story will have you alternately chortling from the humor and sniffing back tears.
The book also provides the backstory on Galaxy’s ascension from shelter volunteer to the star of Animal Planet’s My Cat from Hell and owner of Spirit Essences, a company that provides holistic remedies for animals (and yes, they work!)
This is a can’t-put-it-down book that you’ll be reading long into the night. And Mousebreath is quoted on the back cover!
